A BRICS Research Centre to be Established in Svalbard

In 2024, the construction of the BRICS research centre will begin in Svalbard. A corresponding directive from the Government of the Russian Federation will be signed soon.

The interest of the states is primarily driven by climate change in the Arctic and Antarctic regions and the need to coordinate efforts in this direction.

The idea of creating an international centre remains on the agenda. Currently, everything depends on the political situation.

BRICS is an interstate association, a union of ten countries: Brazil, Russia, India, the People's Republic of China, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Saudi Arabia. The research centre will be similar to Norway's University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS).
