The Arctic attracts scientists worldwide majoring in studying geology, biological resources, ecology, permafrost thawing, global warming, economics and society. Also, more than 500 organisations in 50 Russian regions currently conduct Arctic research. The great attention to the region from companies and scientists emphasises the need for a Council.
The new body will be created under the State Commission for Arctic Development to ensure coordination between federal executive agencies and scientific organisations. In addition, it will set the research agenda for the Arctic. It is also planned to create a special fund to support Arctic projects’ implementation.
The decision was made at a meeting on organising research and development in the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation, Taimyr Telegraph reports referring to the Russian Office of the Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District.
