Despite the American efforts to expand presence in the Arctic, the Trump administration has cut the budget for entities working in the region as part of The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) work.
On 14 March, a Fact Sheet containing the list regarding the cut of "Federal Bureaucracy" was published on the website of the American government.
In general, it contains global media-related agencies and funds; however, there are also organisations connected to the research of the Arctic—e.g., the Wilson Center (an undesirable organisation in Russia).
The initial version of the Fact Sheet had also contained the Arctic Research Committee, which was later deleted from the text. This version can be accessed via the Web Archive copy (15 March).
As part of DOGE's work, the reasons for cuts are highlighted as follows: eliminating waste, reducing government overreach, and reforming the federal bureaucracy. The following is said on the topic of overreach:
Cutting these governmental entities will save taxpayer pounds, reduce unnecessary government spending, and streamline government priorities.
—Fact Sheet, 14 March, 2025
By reducing the Federal footprint, President Trump is returning power to local communities and state governments.
"The American people elected President Trump to drain the swamp and end ineffective government programmes that empower government without achieving measurable results," the document reads. It states that the order "eliminates non-statutory functions and reduces statutory functions of unnecessary governmental entities to what is required by law."
