Military support is good, but direct investments better. More funding is needed to build roads and local infrastructure in Eastern Lapland, northern Finland.
The Finnish news agency reports that Finnish representatives in Brussels have recently discussed these questions.
Finns are hinting at the point that, for instance, in Kemijärvi, the Kalliosalmi bridge is being renovated with EU funding, which is admittedly indirectly related to NATO affairs. The «most lofty dreams in the villages», they say, refer to building a four-lane road up to Kemijärvi or building a large base at the Rovajärvi training area.
Last summer, Major General Pekka Toveri stated that unnecessary modesty does not work when competing for the location of NATO's functions.
