The first cargo vessel has arrived at the Mogilev-Beltamozhservice transport and logistics centre in Belarus via the Northern Sea Route.
The goods, intended for Belarusian businesses, were shipped from the port of Shanghai in August 2024. The container ship travelled through the Chukchi Sea and arrived at the port of St. Petersburg. From there, the cargo was transported by truck to the logistics centre, taking a total of 35 days. This marks the first use of the Northern Sea Route by Belarusian companies, and it kicks off a new logistics service that is expected to be in demand, according to Alexander Skachkovsky, the deputy director of Beltamozhservice (the largest logistics operator in the Republic of Belarus).
“The Northern Sea Route is one of the promising transport corridors. It allows for a 40% reduction in delivery time when transporting goods from the People's Republic of China to the Republic of Belarus and vice versa, compared to the traditional southern route. Today, a new logistics service has been launched”.
This trial shipment is for a Belarusian enterprise, and demand for this route is anticipated to grow.
“Today, business companies can deliver the products from China to Belarus via the Northern Sea route. The navigation period ranges from two to four months, and the use of icebreakers will enable year-round operation. I am confident that it will be in demand. Businesses will be able to plan their deliveries systematically. Stability means development. Container ships can carry up to 5,000 containers at a time”.
