Greenlandic Prime Minister To Set Limits For USA

The acting chairman of Greenland’s government (Naalakkersuisut) Múte B. Egede believes that the U.S. vice president's wife's planned visit to Greenland is an expression of great disrespect for the country.

The wife of the U.S. vice president, Usha Vance, has announced a visit to Greenland precisely at a time when the parties are negotiating to form a new government after the election.

According to the acting chairman of Naalakkersuisut, Múte B. Egede, the visit can be perceived as a dangerous provocation directed at Greenlandic society.

Such interference is a violation of our democratic principles and testifies to a lack of respect for our self-determination, he says.

Usha Vance, wife of U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, arrives in Greenland on Thursday. She plans to visit Nuuk, Pituffik and Sisimiut.

Two large U.S. Hercules aircraft landed at Nuuk Airport on Sunday, from where four vehicles were unloaded.

The acting chairman of the Greenlandic government, Múte B. Egede, tells KNR that the U.S.'s actions are a clear sign of lack of respect for Greenland.

Regardless of what is officially said, this visit can be interpreted in a different way. I believe that it is yet another clear expression of disrespect. Although our political position has already been made clear, actions have been taken without taking into account that meetings and other processes can only take place when a new government is formed.

Insufficient actions in our country

After the U.S. president stated that he wants to buy Greenland – and if necessary will take it by military force – there have been several protests in various places in the country.

At the same time, Greenland's party leaders have jointly expressed their opposition to the situation.

But that is not enough, says Múte B. Egede.

There must be a direct face-to-face meeting. Friends and allies do not behave like this towards each other – we must set a limit.

We know that people in recent days and in the coming time will be characterized by this mood. We need security in Greenland, and the incoming government will have to take care of this by quickly setting limits on U.S. behavior.

The situation continues to develop, as the wife of the U.S. vice president is expected to arrive this week.

But before that, international media have reported on support for Greenland from our allies. According to the acting chairman of the Greenlandic government, however, this support is not sufficiently clear.

We have not yet seen any of our allies make a clear statement. And we need our friends among the nations. Therefore, they must come forward more clearly - there is no other way. The vague declarations must end.

We must move on. We are here in Greenland because we want to live here and pass on our country to future generations. We cannot remain in uncertainty for so long.

Múte B. Egede also calls on the Greenlandic people to continue their protests and emphasizes that this is a way to demonstrate to the United States that limits must be set.

No meetings between government and guests from the USA

When Greenland receives a visit from the USA later this week, there will be no meetings between the guests and the Greenlandic government.

This is what the acting chairman of the Greenlandic government Múte B. Egede says:

The Americans have also been clearly informed that meetings can only take place when a new Greenlandic government has taken office. Furthermore, it must be stated in bold that our integrity and democracy must be respected, without any outside interference.

Múte B. Egede states that the visit from the U.S. cannot be seen only "as a private visit".

We can already see how big a stir it has created.

The international community should speak out

U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed several times that he wants Greenland to become part of the US.

In the post, Múte B. Egede makes it clear that he has "great understanding" if this has also triggered concern.

To Sermitsiaq, he also calls for the international community to speak out much more clearly against the U.S. and support Greenland.

Our other allies in the international community feel like hiding in a small corner and almost whisper that they support us. It has no effect, and if they do not speak out loudly against how the U.S. treats Greenland, the situation will escalate day by day, and American aggression will increase. So, we need our other allies to clearly and clearly come with their support and backing for us.

says Múte B. Egede to Sermitsiaq

He therefore also wants a new and effective Greenland government to be quickly established.

Negotiations on a new Greenland government are still ongoing.

The visit is about learning more about Greenland and respecting its independence

The White House announced late Sunday US time that Mike Waltz and Chris Wright will, among other things, visit the military base Pituffik Space Base. According to the White House, Waltz and Wright will receive briefings from stationed U.S. personnel at the military base.

The security advisor and energy secretary will also participate when Usha Vance visits historical sites and attends Greenland's national dog sled race during her stay.

Usha Vance, who is married to Vice President J.D. Vance, is leading the U.S. delegation, according to Reuters.

Brian Hughes, a White House spokesman, told Reuters that the visit is an opportunity to build partnerships that respect Greenland's independence.

The visit is about learning more about Greenland, its culture, history and people, and to watch a dog sled race sponsored by the United States, says Brian Hughes.

Approximately 60 Danish police officers and three police dogs have flown here because the wife of the American vice president is visiting Greenland from Thursday to Saturday.

It is not yet known who is on board the Hercules planes that have just landed, but KNR is following the situation closely.

At first glance it looks like several officials, says KNR's journalist at the airport, but inside the Hercules planes there are not only people on board. The Americans also have their own cars with them. In total they have four cars with them.
