The eyes of the world were still on Greenland yesterday as U.S. Vice President JD Vance, his wife Usha, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and other officials visited the U.S. Pituffik Space Station in Greenland.
The president has a strong interest in Arctic security, and as you know, that will continue to grow in importance over the next few decades,
Vance said in an address to troops at the base.
It is generally understood that the visit of the vice president, who is the highest-ranking U.S. official to have visited Greenland, is intended to further emphasize U.S. President Donald Trump's stated interest in bringing Greenland under U.S. control.
Greenlanders have received the U.S. government's statements coldly, and ministers in Greenland's new home government, which was formed March 28, emphasized that the democratic will of Greenlanders to govern their own affairs without foreign intervention should be respected. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has also criticized the fact that U.S. officials are visiting Greenland uninvited.
Initially, Usha Vance planned to go to Greenland alone with her son to learn about Greenlandic culture and, among other things, to attended a dog sled race in the town of Sisimiut. But the Greenlanders reacted badly to the plans and called for protests. The visit to Sisimiut was cancelled and instead a trip to Pituffik on the northwest coast of Greenland was planned.
