Rosatom: The US Sanctions Will Postpone Projects in the Arctic

Washington's sanctions against Rosatom will lead to a shift in deadlines for a number of northern projects, but there will be no major changes in the company's operations, its head, Alexei Likhachev, has said.

According to Likhachev, some parameters regarding production and the transport of export cargoes will be achieved within a slightly longer timeframe. "There is nothing to worry about in this."

"The Americans and the EU leaders are consistently adopting restrictive measures against our northern projects, mining projects, logistics companies, and insurance organisations that deal with cargo insurance. However, in my assessment, Arctic projects are adapting to these sanctions. Of course, some parameters regarding production and, therefore, the transport of export cargoes will be achieved over a slightly longer period of time," said Alexei Likhachev.

We now need to reconsider, taking into account all the decisions made in the company, the schedule for the growth of trade turnover and cargo traffic along the Northern Sea Route.

He noted that the financial model, and thus the pace of construction and commissioning of nuclear icebreakers, vessels, and the technological maintenance of the vessels, is tied to this.

For the background of the issue, The Arctic Century's opinion on the matter: NSR Development Scenarios Reconsidered.

The head of Rosatom also emphasised that the latest sanctions from the United States concern almost the entire management of the state corporation and that it's a decision against citizens, which, in his opinion, should have no consequences for cooperation in the field of peaceful nuclear energy.

Personal sanctions against Likhachev, along with other businessmen connected to the energy sector, were introduced on 10 January.
