The Ivan Frolov research vessel is due to enter service by 2029 as the replacement for the Akademik Fedorov, built in 1987.
The ship will be built in St. Petersburg at Admiralty Shipyards and act as a tanker, an icebreaker, a passenger liner, a freighter and a research vessel.
We will start cutting metal for the new unique research vessel ‘Ivan Frolov’ in December. The contract for its construction was signed in May this year, Andrey Veselov, General Director of JSC Admiralty Shipyards, told St. Petersburg Diary.
The expedition vessel will transport cargo necessary for polar explorers and staff to Arctic and Antarctic stations. The research vessel will comfortably accommodate up to 170 scientists.
