Russia Discusses Arctic Cooperation with Brazilian Research Centres

 

Alexander Makarov, Director of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, mentioned potential opportunities for cooperation during a meeting with Brazilian polar and scientific organizations at the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The discussion took place during a meeting between Nikolai Korchunov, Russian Ambassador to Norway, Senior Arctic Official in the Arctic Council, and member of the Presidium of the State Commission for Arctic Development, and a delegation of Brazilian university and research centre representatives. 

The discussion focused on polar research, scientific and technological cooperation, and educational partnerships in the Arctic region.

From the Russian side, participants included Pavel Maryandyshev, Acting Rector of the Northern (Arctic) Federal University, along with specialists from Ammosov North-Eastern Federal University, Murmansk Arctic University, and the Marine Research Centre of Lomonosov Moscow State University.

On the Brazilian side, José Daniel Diniz Melo, President of the National Association of Federal University Leaders of Brazil, four university rectors, representatives of the National Atomic Energy Commission, and officials from the Brazilian Embassy in Moscow were present.

The meeting addressed such issues as climate change, biodiversity and marine resources, technologies, and opportunities for organizing joint expeditions. 

The in-depth discussion helped outline future directions for Russian-Brazilian cooperation in polar research, as well as scientific, technological, and educational collaboration in the Arctic region.
