Scientists from Novosibirsk State Technical University have developed a unique way to extract energy in the Arctic — using a special wind turbine that works even at ultra-low temperatures.
The project was entrusted to Novosibirsk scientists, as they are specialists in operating technology in the Far North.
A feature of the invention is a special rotating structure, which has advantages not only from an engineering standpoint, but also from an environmental point of view. The same principle is used as on yachts with a turbo-sail. In fact, the generator uses a vertical wing. The movable element does not pose a danger to northern birds.
The concept of a wind turbine involves the use of one or two Arctic-class shipping containers installed on a fast-mounting foundation in places with high wind potential. One generator has a capacity of 50-100 kW.
The complex is mobile, and if necessary, the same elements can be combined into one system, increasing the capacity of the installation.
Previously, the Arctic Century wrote of a modular wind generator which has been developed specifically for the Arctic conditions. As we can see, the concept of modules are used more frequently. However, the key difference is that this wind turbine is a more traditional horizontal axis generator.
