Following the results of the summer of 2024, the Green Patrol published the National Environmental Rating of the Regions of the Russian Federation, in which three regions of the Arctic zone of Russia entered the top ten.
The Murmansk region took the honourable 3rd place, which was the result of many years of efforts by local authorities, business and the public. Head of the Department of Environmental Initiatives of the Green Patrol noted that many environmental projects are being implemented in the region, including general cleaning of unauthorized landfills and reclamation of contaminated territories.
In 9th place is the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, which was ranked 8th in the autumn of 2023, and 10th in winter. The Nenets Autonomous Okrug rounded out the top ten, rising from 12th place thanks to the efforts of Clean Arctic volunteers, who cleaned 20 hectares of the coast and collected 700 tons of scrap metal in three years.
However, not all regions show positive dynamics. The Republic of Komi dropped to 17th place, while the Republic of Karelia improved its position by 5 points, reaching 20th place. The Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug was in 33rd place, and the Arkhangelsk Region rose one position to 36th place.
At the bottom of the ranking are the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) and the Krasnoyarsk Territory, occupying 76th and 78th places, respectively. However, with the launch of Norilsk Nickel's Sulphur Program, which aims to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions by 900 thousand tons in the Norilsk Industrial District, the situation in the Krasnoyarsk Territory may improve.
The Arctic regions show that an integrated approach to environmental protection and the active participation of local residents can significantly affect the environmental situation, despite the existing challenges.
