The UK has imposed sanctions on five LNG tankers and two shipping companies linked to the Arctic LNG-2 project. This is the first time the UK has directly sanctioned LNG vessels.
On September 26, 2024, the UK government announced sanctions against five liquefied natural gas tankers and two operating companies, implying that they are involved in Russian LNG projects.
The five sanctioned tankers are:
- Pioneer (IMO 9256602)
- Asya Energy (IMO 9216298)
- Nova Energy (IMO 9324277)
- North Sky (IMO 9953523)
- SCF La Perouse (IMO 9849887)
Previously, the US had already sanctioned Pioneer, Asya Energy, North Sky, and Nova Energy for their involvement with the sanctioned Arctic LNG-2 project. Following this, the UK also sanctioned:
- Ocean Speedstar Solutions OPC (operator of Pioneer and Asya Energy)
- White Fox Shipmanagement (operator of North Sky)
The sanctioned vessels are banned from English ports, and their UK registrations may be revoked.
The UK government stated that:
- Sanctions target five vessels and two associated organizations involved in transporting Russian LNG, including the gas from the Arctic LNG-2 project.
- These actions align with efforts countering Russia's attempts to increase future revenues from energy.
These sanctions mark the first direct targeting of LNG tankers by the UK, which currently has imposed such measures against 15 vessels and organizations involved in the Russian LNG sector.
The UK Government said that they plan to continue exerting pressure on Russia's LNG. This demonstrates country’s growing concern over Russia's plans to boost LNG sales, increasing global market presence from 8% to 20%.
