USA Researchers Advance Climate Science. In spring 2024 researchers from Lincoln Laboratory spent a week on the frozen Beaufort Sea in Alaska.
Researchers joined Operation Ice Camp 2024 during which they deployed sensor nodes to measure atmospheric conditions, ice properties, and water structure. These sensors are used with the aim of increasing understanding of Arctic ice loss, which impacts global sea levels and weather.
In March 2023, the team tested sensor nodes on Lake Superior, proving their resilience in harsh conditions. They later deployed a sensor node in Utqiaġvik, Alaska, capturing seismic activity from ice collisions.
In January 2024, the team practised Arctic deployment techniques at Portage Lake. They deployed sensors to profile water conductivity, temperature, and depth, and installed a sensor array outside the camp.
The researchers also tested Arctic-hardened drones for data retrieval. They interacted with other scientists and military personnel, building connections within the Arctic community.
Future plans include analysing collected data, refining sensor designs, and exploring renewable energy options to power the sensors. USA Researchers continues.
