Specialists will restore a meteorological station in the Pyramiden settlement in Svalbard, Norway under the Science and Universities Russian national project, the St. Petersburg Committee for Arctic Affairs reports.
The PORA Expert Centre provided a grant in the amount of 100 thousand rubles, which was allocated for the plan preparation. The project is expected to be completed by the end of November 2023, the Committee said.
The Expert Centre was established to attract attention to the social, economic, and ecological aspects of life in Russia's Far North.
Students-climatologists (meteorologists) from leading Russian universities will use the renovated building of the weather station for work and accommodation. In turn, the students will act as guides for tourist groups.
The expected result is the creation of a new domestic interactive tourist route in Svalbard, the Committee explained. This will help in attracting tourists.
Experts will create a tour programme for Russian and foreign tourists. Besides, travellers will be able to make their own instrumental observations using historical equipment.
